Understanding Your Water Service Line
A water service line is a section of pipe that connects the Jackson Energy Authority water main under the street and delivers water to homes and businesses in our community. Typically, water service lines have split ownership, a utility-owned section (public) and a customer/property owner-owned section (private.) The water main under the street and water service line from the water main to the meter inlet is owned and maintained by Jackson Energy Authority. The water service line from the meter outlet to the premise and premise plumbing equipment is owned and maintained by the customer or property owner. The illustration below is representative of a single-family water service line connection responsibilities. Variations may apply as not all connections are the same.
Jackson Energy Authority Responsibility
- Water main under the street
- Pipes connecting to the water main under the street
- Service line from the water main to the inlet side
- Water meter, water meter box, and outlet side coupling
Customer or Property Owner Responsibility
- Ensuring clear access to water meters for reading and maintenance
- Premise service line from the meter to the house
- House valve
- Premise plumbing equipment, both inside and outside the house
