Wastewater Collection
For the most part, Jackson Energy Authority’s wastewater collection process is gravity driven, efficiently using laterals, mains, lift stations and interceptors to pump the wastewater to the treatment plants. Each part of the collection process plays an important role:
- Sewer Lateral – the pipeline that connects the property to the sewer main, owned and maintained by the property owner.
- Sewer Main – the pipeline that carries wastewater from the connected laterals to the force or gravity mains.
- Manholes – the vertical pipe placed along specific intervals that allow for access for inspection, cleaning or maintenance.
- Sewer Force Main – the pressurized main pipe that helps carry wastewater against gravity (if needed) to other pipes further along the system.
- Gravity Main – the large network of underground pipes that transport wastewater to the lift stations and treatment plants.
- Lift Station – the area along the network that pumps wastewater from low elevation areas to higher elevation areas to continue the gravity-driven flow to the treatment plants.
- Interceptors – the largest diameter pipes that are the furthest along the network that controls the flow of the raw wastewater before it enters the treatment facility.
- Treatment Facility – the final destination of the influent (raw wastewater) where it will undergo a thorough process of treatment to ensure the effluent (discharged water) is clean and safe for the source of the discharge.
