How CNG is Used

The natural gas that gets delivered to our homes, businesses and industries powers millions of vehicles worldwide as compressed natural gas. Many types, from sedans to light duty vehicles (corporate fleets) to heavy-duty transit vehicles (buses, semis and garbage trucks), can be fueled by compressed natural gas. While municipal government, public transportation and large corporations were early adopters of CNG vehicles, consumer car manufacturers’ adoption rates are steadily increasing.

Using CNG as a transportation fuel helps reduce vehicle maintenance costs, as it contains no additives and burns clean, leaving no combustible by-products. The engines of CNG vehicles run quieter and produce substantially fewer emissions than gasoline or diesel. Conventional gasoline/internal combustion engine vehicles can be retrofit to utilize CNG or vehicles can be manufactured for CNG use, with a dedicated or dual fuel source.
