Overhead Powerlines
Electricity travels along the overhead power lines visible in communities everywhere so it’s important to always be aware of overhead lines. Remember to use extreme caution and stay away from overhead power lines. Materials such as metal, water, trees, the ground, animals and people can be conductors of electricity. If you come in contact with power lines, you could become electricity’s path from the lines to the ground. Following these safety tips can help keep you safe around overhead power lines at home, on the jobsite or on the farm.
- Always look up to be aware of any overhead power lines.
- Never climb power poles or transmission towers.
- Never touch a power line with any part of your body.
- Never touch a power line with an object such as a metal ladder, antenna, metal gutter or any other long metal object.
- Stay at least 10 feet away from all overhead power lines.
- Never touch anything in contact with power lines.
- Be cautious when working on a roof, as overhead power lines could be near.
- Do not prune near power lines or remove fallen branches from power lines.
- Do not throw objects such as ropes or strings up into power lines.
- Keep model planes, drones, kites and balloons safely away from overhead power lines.
- Never shoot or throw anything at poles, insulators, transformers or wires.
- Stay clear of substations and do not climb substation fences, walls or gates.
- Obey all danger and warning signs as all electrical equipment can be dangerous.
- Never spray water near power lines.
- Be cautious of fencing near power lines.
- Lower any equipment apparatus before driving to avoid coming in contact with overhead power lines.
